i'm going to get a massage . . . EEK! my podiatrist mentioned that i should get some kind of remedial massage on my lower legs to help repair muscle flexibility or something after having shin splints earlier this year, and also in order to reduce the risk of future injury. today i noticed that a myotherapist and a remedial masseur (masseuse? massagerer?) also work in the same building as my chiropractor, so i talked to my chiropractor about it. she winced and said, "myotherapist, and it's going to be extremely painful!" so i am going in on thursday for this treatment. i really hope the myotherapist doesn't want me to get naked - after all, it's just my legs that i want worked on for the moment.
it feels slightly wasteful/indulgent getting all of these body treatments, but i'm fortunate that a lot of it is covered by my extras health insurance (which i got when i was a teenager for my orthodontic work and never stopped paying). and also, hey, i only have the one body, so i might as well look after it as best i can with the money i have. i'm actually really looking forward to getting some pro massage - and i'm sure db will be happy that i'm not making him do it!

i think it's great - and as you say, you only get the one body. (you wouldn't think *i* was being wasteful getting myotherapy etc, right? your body deserves looking after just as much as mine does.)
i'll now ramble at you about my experiences, feel free to ignore if it's not what you're afer in reply to your post. :)
none of the various myotherapists/massage therapists/osteopaths etc that i have seen have asked me to take all of my clothes off (only my top, but that's because they're working on my back). when i've had stuff done with my legs, i've usually worn either long shorts or kept my non-denim pants on (although most tend to use lotion-y stuff, which you can only do on skin. i have, however, had many successful massages over clothes, so i definitely think that would be a reasonable request, and is *probably* something most professional massage people are used to hearing*.)
*this is based entirely on speculation.
PS i hope it's awesome and not too painful! (up until this afternoon i would've said the order of painfulness tends to go back>legs>arms, but after my most recent massage, i now know that jaw trumps all, at least in my case! *g*)
you're right - i wouldn't think you were being indulgent at all. i felt slightly vindicated when she was seriously impressed with how tight my muscles were and that even the dry needling* didn't make a huge amount of difference. my legs are all tender now, and i'm going back for more next week!
i ended up wearing shorts without leggings underneath, so i didn't have to take off anything by my shoes and socks.
* DRY NEEDLING! i've never had acupuncture, so it was loads of fun. she let me watch as she stuck 8 needles in my left shin and five in my right. my foot twitched liek whoa! it was so cool.
when i saw an osteo for my shin splints he wanted me to take my pants off and i said 'umm.. no' . It was in summer though so i was usually wearing gym shorts anyway, so it didnt matter. but it made me feel weird, as if he thought i was homophobic and didnt want to take my pants off around a guy or something.
yeah, it's all a bit awkward, really. i'm not sure what the myotherapist thought of me - i mean, my hip bones were higher than she thought they were going to be. heh. and also, small talk always ends up turning to what i'm studying . . . and that's trans stuff, so, oh well.
but i guess i don't mind if they know i'm trans, just so long as they don't immediately start treating me like a girl or mispronouning me. which most people don't, so that's good.
